If you are interested in working with me on computer systems research, I may have RA positions available. I am open to advising ECE or CSE students. Make sure you read the following before contacting me.

What am I looking for in a graduate student?

  • Highly motivated - you should be a self starter and ready to jump into new things. This is research not class work so the answer's not always apparent, so be prepared to do some investigating to find the answer, if it even exists. I can't baby-sit you and spoon food solutions to you. By the end of your thesis work, I expect that you will know more about the topic than me or anyone else for that matter.
  • Don't be afraid to fail - a lot of times research means that you don't get the answer you expected which means you have to try something new.
  • Interested in similar research to me - I do research in storage systems primarily but I also do some work in reconfigurable computing, VLSI design and CAD, and distributed computing. Take a look at some of my publications to get a flavor of what I do. Does it sound like something you would like to do for the next four years or so?
  • Enjoy programming - a lot of what I do requires a lot of programming work, so you better like it (or at least not dislike it too much). If you have experience in C/C++ that's great. If you've delved into the Linux kernel, even better.
  • Specific experience that's useful - file system work, networking, Unix, Linux, VHDL, FPGAs
What do you do if you're still interested?
  • I can review your qualifications if you send me your information. Make it one or two paragraphs and try to make sure you convince me that you match what I am looking for in a graduate student as described above.
  • You will need to complete the online application procedure with the University Graduate School. February 1st is the deadline for the Fall and November 1st is the deadline for the Spring. The Field of Study is "Electrical Engineering" and Area of Concentration can be left blank.
  • The Graduate School will usually get back to you within 2-3 months to let you know if you have been admitted.
